Piano Books

I read – a lot.  These happen to be some of my all time favorite books about music and piano – from the teacher’s and performer’s perspective.  They had such a high level of inspiration and educational value for me, I hope they do for you too.

The Perfect Wrong Note

William Westney’s wonderful book had a very positive impact on my teaching. In particular, his emphasis on allowing your students to be independent (and not co-dependent!).

Free Play

I first read “Free Play” about 10 years ago (and have re-read it at least three times). This is a paradigm shifting book for sure! It might not be so much for teachers, but if you are involved in any type of improvised music, you’ll love it!

Effortless Mastery

As a student at The University of New Hampshire, this was my first introduction to Kenny Werner. His master classes were profound and even Spiritual. His book is a must for any performer or teacher.

What Every Pianist Needs To Know About the Body

For a period of a few years, I performed non-stop (about 5-7 gigs a week). That, coupled with other life factors, led me to short period of mild discomfort and strain in my hands and wrists. In addition to physical therapy and retraining myself how to play correctly, this book was a wonderful source of information. I reference it all the time during lessons, and the wonderful graphics in the book are great to show to your students.
